ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the context of Indian business schools, the imperatives for inculcating trusteeship and some initiatives in response to these imperatives. It discusses the experience and outcomes of introducing service-learning projects, called Give Goa projects, at Goa Institute of Management (GIM). The chapter describes the context in which service-learning was implemented at GIM and the background of service-learning and the choices made in the design and conduct of the service-learning projects at GIM. It explains the qualitative research undertaken to explore the reactions to the projects and some of the findings of this research and supplements it with a graduate's perspective on his experience of the project and its outcome. The chapter deals with some reflections on the experience of introducing service-learning projects. Service-learning is "an experiential approach to education that involves students in meaningful, real-world activities that can advance social, emotional, career, and academic curricula goals while benefitting communities".
