ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses an educational framework for responsible learning as the basic infrastructure for Principle 3 of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), with its focus on effective learning experiences for responsible managers and leaders. It begins with a short review of some recent discussions about contemporary management and integrative education and the relevance of a foundational responsible mind-set as the cornerstone of responsible management education. The chapter presents two models. The first is the Relational Model of Learning that illustrates the different dimensions of a student's "learning self", with elements of being, knowing and doing, that influence his or her commitment to learning. The second is the Learning-Engagement model that highlights how students can be encouraged to move from instrumental learning to deeper engagement, which is fundamental to a foundational responsible learning mind-set. Moving from the safe harbour of instrumental learning to a responsible learning mind-set requires conscious teaching design and a supportive learning environment.
