ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how companies can operate as stewards for their employees and working people in society. It begins with a look at today’s workplace which offers attractive opportunities and rewards for skilled, upwardly mobile professionals but typically much less for workaday staff, and low wages and dead-end jobs for less educated, working-class employees. Corporate stewards stand out by fully engaging their employees at every level in productive jobs and by treating them as valued human resources, all to a profitable end. This chapter documents how these practices connect to social responsibility and illustrates both how and why today’s corporate stewards strongly engage their individual employees (me), their workforce overall (we), and working people and their interests more broadly (a collective “all of us”).
