ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on contemporary debates about mining, corporate social responsibility and development. It describes the programmatic context of the case study itself. The chapter outlines the methodological approach used for the review, as well as a descriptive summary of the program. It examines the mining operation’s rationale for engaging in community development. The chapter discusses the consequences of these rationalizing processes on internal and external relationships, and the effect that this has on the strategic direction and utility of the program. It also describes the Lubbock’s remarks as a starting point for examining operational intent in relation to local-level “corporate community development” initiatives in the minerals sector. The chapter concludes with a call for a more coherent approach to understanding community development that enables an “embedded” reading that accounts for the operating environment and the operation’s full suite of organizational processes and systems and a set of final reflections.
