ABSTRACT

This chapter employs Corporate social responsibility (CSR) frameworks in relation to consultation and consent principles to discuss the conflicting political and economic elite groups’ perspectives on the one hand and those of indigenous populations on the other in Mexico. It examines an ecological and environmentally friendly mega-wind energy project that has led two multinational corporations (MNCs) into a conflict with indigenous people. The chapter also examines an ecological and environmentally friendly wind energy project that led two MNCs, Vestas and Marena Renovables, as well as investors into an international dispute in Mexico. It explains the theoretical background on CSR. The chapter argues that consultation should be the basis to seek inputs from local communities to then reach consent. It also explains the theoretical framework exposed in relation to consultation and consent. Members of the economic elite may be attempting to implement their business models in Oaxaca without considering the basic principles of CSR.
