ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the motives that drive large and small private sector developers, along with government institutions, in fostering sustainable growth of the Indian construction industry pivoting on such voluntary standards; measured against the backdrop of sustainable development. Empirical evidence is presented regarding strategic policy formulation aimed at encouraging green building practices in India, illustrating progress, as well as magnifying the challenges that remain. The incorporation of green ratings by the government has shown a noticeable increase in both encouragement, and enforcement. The overlapping of government regulations and green building rating frameworks further allows for the scenario where a project that meets the prerequisites as per the local regulations, can effortlessly accomplish the rating criteria as well. Similar to the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility, green ratings systems have adopted a focus on visibility, and subsequently, the promotion of a "green agenda" within popular society.
