ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents a resource for the increasing number of facilitators that wish to help students learn about the promise and pitfalls of social enterprise. It highlights cases from around the globe authored by teachers from around the globe. The selected cases span many industries and geographic contexts, nevertheless they are connected by a shared ambition: to highlight the power of entrepreneurship to solve social problems. The book addresses several teaching objectives, some focusing on the context of health care delivery in developing countries while others focusing on the challenges associated with growth and expansion in socially focused entrepreneurial ventures. It discusses the situation at Ndlovu Care Group in July 2008. The book also highlights the specific appeal of a franchising strategy for growth and impact generation.
