ABSTRACT

Headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, Madecasse strategically partners with four farmer cooperatives and a chocolate factory in Madagascar to make single-origin, tree-to-bar chocolates for sale in high-end groceries and chocolate boutiques internationally. Since its inception, the company and its founders have received considerable attention and recognition by the media and the food industry. Exhibit lists the awards and recognition received by Madecasse. Brett Beach Madecasse can fundamentally change how consumption of chocolate in one place creates new economic opportunities for the people of Madagascar. In the world market, cocoa is treated as a commodity and is therefore subject to considerable price fluctuations. Child labor has been a major social issue in the chocolate industry for many years. Low cocoa prices and the desire for lower labor costs drive farmers to employ children as a means to survive.
