ABSTRACT

One of the most egregious of Communism's many sins was to make criminals out of ordinary business people, engaged in making a living, and strip them of their ability to act ethically. Ethics is the kind of subject that can never be settled permanently and “business ethics,” as a discipline for study and inquiry, is a hot topic in the United States and most western countries. Some of the concern among business leaders for ethics is simple self defense. Increasingly the public demands a high ethical standard from firms, and many businesses start off behind in the game. Business, in sharp contrast, is subject both to law and to general opinion in the marketplace. If the public strongly disagrees with a firm's behavior, that firm will suffer in the marketplace. Social scientists and management theorists have identified several component of leadership ability. They include official power, reward/punishment power, knowledge power, personality power, the power of consistency and ethical power.
