ABSTRACT
The few major studies of white-collar crime have dealt with the crime rather than the criminal. Sociological studies of crime have generally depreciated the significance of personality factors in the explanation of white-collar crime. Leyhill Prison is classified as a minimum security regional training prison. The Leyhill population contains a very large proportion of first offenders and men who are good security risks. There are clearly obstacles to the development of the kind of framework which are inherent in the nature of the sample. The choice of criteria for selecting the sample was at first sight difficult. The criteria selected for the sample were: offense, occupation, and social status. After reading the occupations entered in the prison records, it very quickly became clear that no sample of top businessmen from large corporations would be available at Leyhill.
