ABSTRACT
I begin from a simple but strangely controversial assumption: journalism and democracy share a common fate. No journalism, no democracy. What journalist would disagree? But journalists are less likely to agree with its equally true obverse: without democracy there can be no journalism. When democracy falters, journalism falters and when journalism goes awry, democracy goes awry.
