ABSTRACT

Since science as a profession and enterprise evolved from natural philosophy during and after the Enlightenment it has had a changing relationship with government and the administration of the state. When scientific investigation and experiment were first formalized within associations like the Royal Society, the Academie des Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society in the United States, government had little to do with their ongoing operation. Over time, governments have routinely insinuated themselves into the workings of the scientific community. The George W. Bush administration faced off its scientific opposition it tried to outdo them in the "apparatus of scholarship" and in uncovering the facts. The result was a war on the truth, a war on science and a betrayal of the American trust. The scientific community had to suffer the abuse of the Bush administration but so too did high ranking military officers, like Tony Zinni and Antonio Taguba, both of whom elected to reveal the facts.
