ABSTRACT

The psychedelic drugs are merely way to look within and temporarily overcome the factors which make the search more difficult. The psychedelic experience may have made it possible for him to grasp for the first time what basic, personal, feeling, and experiencing religion has always tried to say. The religious or belief changes reported appear to be of a specific nature—that is, a clarification and underlining of positive religious beliefs already held by the subject. A few subjects reported various visual and auditory manifestations which had a religious frame of reference. According to the religious hypothesis outlined in this study, such a statement could come from an individual who had a misconception of what organized religion was saying and doing. Reinforcement of beliefs is accompanied by an increased understanding which results in a broadening, opening, and freeing of pre-existing concepts.
