ABSTRACT

The subjects came from a variety of religious backgrounds and experiences. There were nine people who described themselves as having no religion or being agnostic in their religious attitude. There were seven who stated that they were not practicing the religion in which they had been raised; of these, three had been reared as Jews, two as Roman Catholics, one as a Presbyterian, and one as a Methodist. Six indicated their religious view merely as Protestant; eight stated relationship with the Episcopal Church, and three stated relationship with the Unitarian Church. Two subjects indicated membership in the United Church of Christ of the United States of America (a recent merger of the Congregational-Christian and Evangelical and Reformed denominations). The Presbyterian Church was represented by one subject. The Jewish religion was represented by three people. Three described themselves as “mystics,” “universalists,” and having “a belief in a supreme being.” No practicing Roman Catholic was included in this or any other sample studied.
