ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the findings from interview and observation on a sample of ninety-two persons who have taken lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD-25) one or more times. The sample consists of twenty-four people who took LSD and who were themselves either medical or mental-health professionals or laymen who took LSD in the company of a mental-health professional. In theory, the Ernst Mach Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA), upon hearing of the deviation, would rescind the permit after which time the investigator could not legally acquire nor administer LSD. LSD use is illegal, under FDA laws, whenever it is sold to, acquired by, or given to a person who does not hold the FDA permit. “Psychiatrist friends” most often initiated sample members into the use of LSD. Most sample members had learned about LSD and the center from social contacts; many hoped the drug would produce self-knowledge and other psychotherapeutic effects.
