ABSTRACT

Zihuatanejo is a tropical village about one hundred eighty miles north of Acapulco at the end of an unsurfaced road, open except during the rainy season. Zihuatanejo is a resort of middle-class families who tend to avoid the high prices and fashionable international set at Acapulco. Between May 1 and June 16, 1963, thirty-five persons were resident at Zihuatanejo for the purpose of studying the transpersonative effects of group interaction with the concurrent use of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD-25). The goal for the Zihuatanejo center given in International Federation for Internal Freedom literature was that it was to be a center for study of the transpersonative relationships and for training leaders in the use of LSD for this purpose. Through the transcendental, or transpersonative, effect of the drug, the individual can be liberated from the limits and become aware of the illusory nature of most life experience and sensations.
