ABSTRACT

The guilt feelings produced by the undergraduates' draft exemptions, plus the mixture of fear and of moral revulsion due to the war all undoubtedly played a major role in what was in a way the American Cultural Revolution. Within a few years the American social scene would be drastically altered. Feminism would become a mighty force. Rock-and-roll music would expand its reach to become a national cult. Students and other young people have played an honorable role in the struggle for democracy in many continental countries, and in America in the fight for racial equality. But the university in a democratic country is not the proper place for political struggle. It is noteworthy that the two most successful democratic societies of modern times, Great Britain and the US, arrived where they are without any appreciable contribution by university students.
