ABSTRACT

During the last year-and-a-half of his life, Adam was housebound part of the time and in the hospital the rest of the time. For quite a while, he was hopeful of recovering, but this year he had begun to lose hope. Still, even as recently as a couple of months ago, just before he had a major operation at Brigham and Women's Hospital, he discussed with the author a few things he still hoped to do. In descending order of likelihood, these were: returning to the Davis Center, something he had long been urging him to do, even if only in a wheel-chair; second, making a brief visit back to Poland and western Ukraine, something he deeply regretted not having done; third playing tennis again, something that by this point he had largely realized he would never do again; and, fourth and least likely, seeing the Red Sox win the World Series.
