ABSTRACT
Theories of democracy are relevant in understanding both the manner in which trade unions are governed, and the extent to which they may, through actively representing a specific constituency, broaden accountability within a society. The latter is of particular importance in an age of declining participation in national elections, and where large corporations have seemingly overshadowed the powers of national governments.
