ABSTRACT

There is a debate within feminism regarding the agency of prostitutes. This debate is between the Prostitutes Rights (PR) and Feminists Against Systems of Prostitution movements. Both groups are feminist and are concerned with the welfare of prostitutes, although their analyses differ fundamentally. If a member of society had total and completely free agency, the person could make choices without any constraints being placed on his or her behavior. Competing with agency, or free choice, as an explanation for human behavior, many philosophers, academics, and others view people as mostly responding to a priori situations, more than influencing those situations. People who emphasize social structures as shaping human activity generally focus first on the constraints that an individual faces when making choices or taking action. Members of the PR movement do not want clients or managers to be arrested, however.
