ABSTRACT

The old war between the genders has lost most of its ferocity. Men are protesting in private, and hold on grimly to their positions of power in politics, industry, academia, and the media. Reduce the salience of work and the edge would be taken off the competition between the genders. The only way to win is to move the goalposts, and play another game in which both genders win, in which the drive for equality is succeeded by something more fundamental, the drive for difference. Children have been timetabled, their slow rhythms of growth and world-discovery made subservient to the more mechanical rhythms of the office and the factory. Men and women could be gradually relieved of the cultural imperative to step up their incomes on a steady gradient every year. Some of the most important qualities and differences of the human race are femininity and masculinity.
