ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the political analysis elaborated by the Austrian legation in Prague and shows how the Austrian legation assessed the process, chances, and perils of the Prague Spring; this information is based on the 'political reports' to the Ballhausplatz, made accessible in the Austrian State Archives. It shows what impact the intervention of the "socialist brother countries," led by the Soviet Union, had on Czechoslovak-Austrian relations—with special focus on the actions of the legation in Prague in the crucial months of August and September and their consequences. During the crisis, the Czechoslovak government had shown its satisfaction and gratitude about the attitude of the Austrian government and the Austrian people. The Czechoslovak crisis in August 1968 did not have an appreciable impact on the volume of commercial exchange. More than half a year after the occupation by the 'socialist brother countries' the Austrian minister in Prague made a comprehensive analysis of the state of Austro-Czechoslovak relations.
