ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the treatment program while also elaborating on the rationale for each successive step as it satisfied the requirements of personality characteristics of S, economy, coordination with S's total treatment program, and long-term effects. A secondary objective was to demonstrate the effectiveness of selecting treatment procedures in consideration of behavioral characteristics of the patient as well as their appropriateness in a residential treatment setting. Residential care necessitates a requirement of economy, which in this instance meant a minimum scheduling of professional staff time. The treatment program was designed so that these reinforcement contingencies would eventually be reversed; attention and anxiety-reduction would be contingent upon correct speech rather than stuttering. The behavioral program herein was devised so that the majority of treatment time involved educational and child-care worker staff in such a way that it would not deter from their scheduled duties.
