ABSTRACT

This chapter indicates that the author neurosis was an unsuccessful superstructure erected on top of his psychical infantilism. It consists of sufferers from pathological disturbances of consciousness, hysterical or epileptic disturbances about which they can generally give no information whatever. The chapter also consists of restless and wandering souls. The motivation for desertion in the category is fear of punishment for some offense. Desertion in the eyes of the law implies the intention to absent oneself permanently from one's military duty. The reason given for desertion by the category is inability to stand the strain of their duties. Deserters of the next category, are very numerous and their motive is homesickness. Information about displacement of the sexual instinct to non-erotic situations is readily obtainable by a closer study of psychoanalysis. The chapter concludes with category, in which the motive was lack of interest in the purposes of the present war, or opposition to war as such.
