ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the basic understanding of culture that the "ensemble" of values which are interiorized by individuals of a given group and, as such, guide their choices, behaviors, and actions. Hence there is room for dynamics between the globalization process affecting cultures and the resistance of cultures. Culture and cultural changes have recently become an important issue in Futures Studies. Women are generally acknowledged for their role as transmitters of culture in terms of shared values. The chapter argues that in this specific historical moment, women have a special role to play since they did not participate in the building of either the industrial society, but were simply coopted by it. Women suffered the negative effects of the industrial, or post-industrial service society, although in the latter they seem to be more active and better recognized. The chapter deals with globalization and traditional cultures.
