ABSTRACT

“You don’t look like a grandmother,” they say. As tactfully as I can I reply that I do look like a grandmother; it is the picture of a grandmother inside their heads which has to be adjusted. The new grandmother of today does not have a bag of knitting and an apron; she has a briefcase and a mobile phone and hurries from her office to help with bath and bedtime. The new grandmother of today does not sit at home waiting to be visited: she finds a holiday bargain on the Internet and flies off around the world to return with exotic presents for her beloved grandchildren. The only thing which has not changed at all is the abiding love which grandmothers have for their grandchildren.
