ABSTRACT

The lives of women in my family have been going through a transformation for over a century. But the pace of change has become much more rapid in my own life-time than it was earlier on. In essence my maternal grandmother Catherine - bom in 1877 in Wales - my mother Mary - bom 1902 in Wales - and I - bom 1928 in London - have all had the same goal as grandmothers. Despite our differing social, political and emotional experiences we have all been mothers, and then grandmothers involved in the care of our grandchildren.
