ABSTRACT

The Human Rights Campaign Fund Board of Directors has announced the formation of an AIDS Campaign Trust (ACT) to elect members of the US House of Representatives and Senate who favor increased AIDS funding on a federal level. According to the fund's executive director Vic Basile, "The AIDS crisis is worsening and has become a political issue, even though it should be a public health issue." "For ACT, it will be," confirmed Basile. For example, ACT will support Tony Coehlo, an incumbent Congressman from California. Although he is not a sponsor of the gay rights bill, Coehlo has been "very helpful on AIDS funding issues and there ought to be a way to acknowledge his support." ACT plans to do heavy fundraising, including direct mail and benefit events. They will try to identify "new money" through individual donors who have not yet contributed to gay causes.
