ABSTRACT

Louise Hay, director of the Love Yourself, Heal Yourself Center in Santa Monica, California, brought her message of alternative healing for AIDS to full and enthusiastic New York crowds. In a 1980s play on the Reichian theme that repression contributes to disease, Hay attributes AIDS and cancer to an emotional blockage of grief within an individual. According to Hay, "Gay people have all the problems everyone else does, plus other people's condemnation which is a heavy burden to carry. Add to that a lot of sexual guilt." Hay then called upon members of the audience to testify. Some were part of her road show, like the healthy-looking sunburnt man who declared that because of Hay he is well and accepting "everybody as they are." He was followed by a spontaneous burst of affection and approval from audience members.
