ABSTRACT

On June 14th, 90,000 people poured into New York's Central Park to mark the tenth anniversary of the Soweto uprising in South Africa and to renew efforts to challenge apartheid in South Africa and the United States. The concept of building a gay anti-apartheid contingent in Harlem, originated when Men of All Colors Together (MACT) was approached by the National Anti-Apartheid Organizing Committee. The coordinators thought it was a good idea but didn't have any gay contacts in that community. "We started screaming," said Jackson, "that lesbians and gays aren't just a midtown community. As a third world group it behooved us to make certain we marched from the Harlem State Office Building in coalition with Black and third world people." The Harlem contingent was a rousing success, with good feeling of support and friendliness between men and women. "It's been a good experience for MACT," Jackson said, "because although an alternative route is difficult, with organizing it can work."
