ABSTRACT

With the advent of Clinton's election, there was a new aura of hope. Even though he seemed to bungle or ignore almost everything he had promised to women and to gay people, it still was an enormous relief to not have the foot of George Bush on our necks. The Avengers went into action, invading Self's Fifth Avenue offices. Within two days the weekend was canceled, although Self claimed that the Avengers had nothing to do with their change of plans. We continued to do actions and continued to attract new members. And, we kept focused on the right wing, not forgetting about Mary Cummins and District 24, who were gaining power daily. Some Avengers attended a forum chaired by Cummins in a conservative Queens neighborhood. The Avengers represent a turning point in lesbian politics, a belief in the grass-roots, a commitment to direct action and creative organizing.
