ABSTRACT

In this chapter, re-reading Travels with Charley in 2015, the author shows that 1987 was the year that marked the beginning of his travels with Bill Doll, a journey that began in the academic landscape of American curriculum studies. Between 1987 and 1989 Bill and the author maintained a paper-based correspondence, one result of which was a symposium at the 1989 American Educational Research Association (AERA) meeting in San Francisco. For the 1994 AERA meeting in New Orleans, Bill, Kathleen R. Kesson, and the author proposed a two-hour interactive symposium and multimedia presentation on "Chaos and Curriculum Inquiry," but the organizers programmed for a forty-minute roundtable with around ten seats. After another AERA meeting in San Francisco, Bill and the author, drove to a farmhouse in Mendocino, where they were joined by Bill Schubert and his family, to begin their initial planning of what would eventually become Curriculum Visions.
