ABSTRACT

One of the most important complications for implanted biomaterials is the attachment of bacteria on their surface and eventual biofilm formation which can result in significant patient discomfort and may require revision surgeries. In this chapter, the sequence, the underlying causes an consequences of bacterial attachment to biomaterial surfaces was given with a specific focus on orthopaedic and dental implants. The bacterial and fungal infections pertaining to implants were explained with the description of bacteria and fungi commonly related with peri-implant infections. This is followed by the definition of bio-film and the steps of its formation.
