ABSTRACT

Iran has been subject to sanctions by individual nations and international bodies since the 1979 revolution which established the Islamic Republic. This chapter explores a mood of optimism about the future and anticipation of a revival of tourism and ideas. It attempts to fill the gap and enhance knowledge and understanding of Iran's experiences. A qualitative approach was adopted involving semi-structured interviews with ten selected representatives from the public and private tourism sectors. The chapter explains expert opinions on Iran's tourism which reveals thinking about sanctions, their consequences and future prospects. It investigates the perceived effects of sanctions and the 2015 agreement on the nation's tourism, focusing on the commercial perspective. Many within the country and outside believed that the situation would improve after 2015 due to greater accessibility and more favourable views of Iran among travellers and the tourism industry worldwide as a place to visit and invest.
