ABSTRACT

To set the stage for a discussion of scholarly and scientific misconduct, the authors present a brief overview of intellectual misconduct, including a variety of recent cases in which intellectual property has allegedly been stolen. Such fabrication and theft occurs in business, journalism, art, music, and literature among other realms. Examples of plagiarism include that by journalist Jonah Lehrer and the speechwriter for Melania Trump. The authors note that scholarship has changed dramatically from the days where solitary scholars pursued research in relative isolation. We live in a world in which various forms of fraud are perpetrated by both individuals and organizations, some of which do substantial harm to society. All these examples from contemporary culture show that intellectual dishonesty is not solely the province of academe, but it can be found wherever there are ideas and their expression.
