ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role of geography and mobility in terms of graduate transition to the workplace. It identifies how the career, migration and employment decisions of graduates can have a complex interrelation using a case study of graduates from two specific communities in the United Kingdom (UK). Policy makers, universities, services and staff need to start treating geography and mobility as important issues in terms of graduate transition. The chapter proposes that careers and employability provision in UK higher education needs to much more fully engage with issues of geography and mobility. It also explores two potential positions for higher education staff such as 'mobiliser' or 'integrator'. The chapter considers a case study: the experience of graduates from two specific communities in the UK–the Orkney and Shetland Islands to explore the relationship of geography, migration, higher education and graduate career paths.
