ABSTRACT

The Jewish and Christian scriptures do not accord with the qur’anic norms of prophethood, scripture and revelation. As a result, Muslim readers can be scandalized not only by the content of these writings, but also by issues of canon, language, genre, voice, authorship and transmission. Attention to each of these scandals can be painful for some Jews and Christians, but such attention is worthwhile for it can reveal the essential nature of the Jewish and Christian scriptures: scriptures compared to the Qur’an not only different in content, but also different in form and function.
