ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the transformation of national borders caused by the development of sub-regions. It particularly focuses on the implementation of the Cross-Border Transport Agreement (CBTA) and the recent conditions at border-crossing points (BCPs) in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS). The chapter aims to describe and discuss the realities of cross-border sub-regionalism promoted by the establishment of the regional CBTA system from the perspective of border transformations. It presents several findings obtained through these field surveys, which were primarily conducted by Tetsu Sadotomo and Kenji Nakayama. The chapter discusses the Daluo Mongla BCP, which is on the North-South Economic Corridor, to compare this non-CBTA border area to the CBTA border areas. It provides a sketch of the development of the GMS program by examining the CBTA and BCPs because the progress of the GMS seems to be based on network-oriented regionalism.
