ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the impact of a Civic Empowerment course held in Ulster, Ireland with adult learners who previously had had neither attachment nor inclination to identify with traditional educational processes. It outlines the opportunities and challenges inherent in engaging with individuals and communities emerging out of conflict and into what some constitute as ‘peace’.

By rethinking the ways in which established teaching methods and materials might be used with new learners the chapter evaluates the role of a university as an unfamiliar learning environment and its impact on views and attitudes towards peacebuilding and conflict transformation. It identifies ways in which universities might offer a route to a positive peace among some of the most divided sections of the population.
