ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights a few of the guidelines and policies that have been developed in the past decade, including the Working Group on Ethics Guidelines for Global Health Training (WEIGHT) guidelines, the World Medical Association (WMA) policy statement, and the Forum on Education Abroad Guidelines. WEIGHT members were selected through a process of consultation with leaders in global health and ethics. Well-structured programmes seem to be the optimal means of ensuring optimal training programmes in global health. Sponsors of global health training programmes understandably desire high quality experiences for trainees as well as minimising any potential adverse consequences related to programmes they support. The World Medical Association (WMA) was founded in 1947 and is an international organisation representing 111 national medical associations. A recent article in Academic Medicine addresses the short-term global health programmes that are proliferating and providing opportunities for students and trainees to participate in a short-term global health experience.
