ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the unique considerations of practice-based practicums pursued by global and public health graduate students in an international setting. Practicums are a standard component of many global health graduate training curriculums. Given the interdisciplinarity and breadth of the global health field, course-based graduate global health programmes, or public health programmes with a global health specialisation typically offer students the opportunity to pursue a "practice-based practicum", that is, neither clinical nor research oriented. Global health practicums offer graduate students a fascinating opportunity to broaden their learning and engage in a rewarding exchange of knowledge. The review seeks to highlight some of the key ethical implications associated with graduate students engaged in practice-based global health placements. While there are similarities between graduate global health students engaged in international practicums and their counterparts in clinical or research-based programmes, the unique ethical dilemmas facing this group of students are often overlooked.
