ABSTRACT

This chapter sheds light on the temporal dimension of Gezi events through the perspectives of protestors who took part in them. Although the events started initially against plans to demolish Gezi Park in Istanbul, they quickly spread in various dimensions. Their simultaneous occurrences in many cities and over a month-long duration were unprecedented and unexpected. Through narratives of 123 protestors in Ankara, the chapter explores the political environment and conflicts in Turkey, how different individuals make sense of complex societal processes that led to Gezi events and how they place the events in the country’s recent histories.
