ABSTRACT
Editors allocate increasing amounts of space to features as access to hard news is more often sought online. Features help to define the tone and character of a publication as well as allowing the writers more freedom in their writing style and choice of subject. This chapter looks at some common types of feature and accounts for the popularity of the genre. It includes a discussion of long-form literary journalism, some of which develops into book-length publications.
