ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the importance of and possibilities for fostering young children’s interest in and curiosity about the world around them. The current landscape of early childhood science education is reviewed, followed by consideration of the potential impacts of poverty on such education. Finally, opportunities and challenges for supporting young children’s early science experiences in impoverished school and community settings are discussed with an emphasis on continuously cultivating children’s inherent inquisitiveness about the natural world.
