ABSTRACT

The Buildings Game is based upon the planning and design processes in the award-winning [ 1 ] Buildings development in Eastwood, Nottingham, a sophisticated phased renewal and rehabilitation scheme in an area of some 200 19th century terraced dwellings (Figs 4.1 and 4.2). The game highlights the complexities of the planning process at local level and brings out the dilemmas facing local authority decision-makers when confronted with an activist resident group. Figure 4.3 itemizes The Buildings, Eastwood, in the early 1970s. The central 'squares' had been largely cleared; the houses that remained were in run-down dilapidated condition.
