ABSTRACT
Non-profit housing has a long history in Denmark going back to the 1860s, when the first non-profit association was formed, but its modern history really dates from 1919 when the Federation of Non-Profit Housing Associations was formed. In the 16th century Denmark formed a much larger part of Scandinavia but 400 years of political and military defeat, culminating in the loss of Southern Jutland in 1860, resulted in Denmark contracting to almost half its original size. The lack of mineral resources meant that industrialisation occurred much later in Denmark than in other countries. During the immediate post war period it had been recognised that changes in the national economy were generating an imbalance of development in the various regions of the country. The prosperity of the country has given substance to the average Dane's desire for the ideal of an individual detached family house in a low density suburb as the typical form of housing development.
