ABSTRACT
[abstract: This chapter describes the background of the School Forest Movement in South Korea based on a holistic perspective, while also presenting how the Korean Society for Holistic Education (KSHE) played an important role in the movement. In 1999, members of the Society visited schools at the elementary and secondary levels in Niigata prefecture, which lies on the northwest coast of Honshu, the largest island in Japan. The schools were well known for using school forests as curriculum content or materials in Japan. Returning to South Korea, the Society members, with the help of Forest for Life, a non-governmental organization (NGO), produced the first school forest at Shingi Elementary School in Anyang near Seoul in the same year. Currently, the movement resulted in generating over 730 school forests in the whole of South Korea. It also briefly discusses key issues in implementing the school forest movement.]
