ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to evaluate and compare the knowledge, attitudes and perceived barriers towards ADR reporting among final year pharmacy and medical students in Malaysia. In this descriptive, cross-sectional study, a total sample of 276 students from four private Malaysian universities were enrolled using convenience sampling method. The data from the completed questionnaires were extracted and analyzed using discriptive and inferential statistical analyses. Pharmacy students showed significantly higher knowledge (P < 0.001) regarding ADRs and its reporting compared to medical students. Both pharmacy and medical students had displayed positive attitude towards ADRs and its reporting. Majority of the students (n = 253, 95%) believed lack of information provided by the patients was the main reason of not reporting ADR. In this study the pharmacy students possessed overall better knowledge than medical students. The in-depth understanding of ADR reporting for all the healthcare students need special emphasis to enhance the productivity of Malaysian pharmacovigilance system.
