ABSTRACT

Interviews are the most direct, personal way to learn about other people. Both the interviewer and the participant bring to this meeting their own body of knowledge and ideally, the meeting is rewarding for both people. There are structured interviews, which are not suitable for qualitative research, unstructured, narrative interviews and semi-structured, ethnographic interviews, which give the most range for studying culture. These require that the researcher prepare a thoughtful set of open-ended questions but also be open to unexpected topics that arise.
