ABSTRACT

Ethical principles for research state that we should obtain participants' informed consent, guard their privacy and confidentiality, the research should benefit humankind in some way and cause no harm to persons or to social institutions, should not involve deception of participants, who must be free to withdraw at any time, and should not be influenced by outside interests or money. These principles are not always simple to abide to, and they are sometimes in conflict with each other. Their interpretation in qualitative research is different than in statistical research. Only ethical research can lead us down the qualitative road to intercultural understanding.
